NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) –There’s a Wilmington barber who has been cutting for more than half a century, and he’s still as sharp as his clippers. Mr. Frank Walker is the man of the hour. At 80 years old, Mr. Walker is still giving out fresh fades, life lessons, and laughter for folks to enjoy.
To some, it’s just a pair of clippers. However, in Walker’s hands, it’s a tool for transformation. At 80 years young, he’s still giving out fresh fades and life lessons with every cut.
“Aw, man. It’s been an adventure- a journey,” said barber Lawrence Riddles.
“I’ve probably learned everything from him,” said Cedroon Emerson.
“He’s cut so many people’s hair, he’s seen people come and go,” said Walker’s client, Sam Armstrong.
Walker has been cutting hair since 1965. That’s 60 years behind the chair— over half a century of steady hands, sharp lines, and loyal clients. And no, he’s not ready to stop.
Keelin: “How much longer do you want to continue cutting hair?”
Walker: “Two more years. I want to try for two more years- 82, I’ll walk away.”
Over time, Walker has made his clients and fellow barbers feel like family.
“He’s been doing something right. He has a routine. He doesn’t step out of his routine. But he’s a real inspiration. Seeing the longevity, it gives you hope as a barber,” Riddles said.
“Every day is different with him. He makes the shop fun and gives it a different atmosphere,” said Emerson.
So, what’s the secret to Walker’s longevity? Maybe it’s his passion or the way he’s mastered the craft.
“A secret- shake it off and move on. It’s hard to make a reputation when you’re working for people. The people make it for you. When you fall, you have to get up and keep going. You can’t do that in quitting,” Walker explained.
But for Walker, every snip is a memory, and every fade- a connection.
While many retire at 65, Frank has no plans to hang up his clippers. So, the next time you’re in the chair, remember that a good haircut might be the best therapy money can buy.
“I love him. It’s been an honor working beside him, and I pray many more years of longevity for him that we can still cut up and have fun,” Riddles shared.
To add on top of that, on Tuesday, Mr. Walker received an award for his 60 years of service to the community.
He was joined by Councilman Kevin Spears and two other barbers.
But Friday, April 18th, is Mr. Walker’s 80th birthday. His fellow barbers told me they were going to give him a special celebration.
