Martin Marietta Materials responds after public hearing on proposed Castle Hayne quarry expansion
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Martin Marietta Materials is responding after a public hearing on its proposed expansion of the Castle Hayne Quarry drew concerns from residents over potential environmental impacts.
The hearing, held on Tuesday by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, provided the public with an opportunity to comment on a Clean Water Act permit application submitted by Martin Marietta for the proposed expansion.
During the hearing, residents raised concerns about the potential impact the project could have on more than 140 acres of wetlands if the expansion is approved.
In a statement provided to WWAY, Martin Marietta said it appreciates the public’s participation in the process and will address concerns once state regulators forward the public comments.
“Martin Marietta appreciates the public input received on this project and looks forward to responding to the comments once they are forwarded to us by the NC Division of Water Resources. We will continue working closely with the NC Division of Water Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to ensure compliance with all applicable Clean Water Act Sections 404 and 401 permitting requirements.
“Our long-standing history and reputation at the Castle Hayne Quarry demonstrate our commitment to providing the region with a reliable, local source of construction materials while responsibly protecting the surrounding community and environment.”
The proposed expansion requires state and federal permits related to impacts on wetlands and other waters protected under the Clean Water Act.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality will continue to accept public comments on the application through August 13.
