NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY)–One New Hanover County teacher is ready to take flight as she enters the Emily Calandrelli teacher astronaut contest.
For the contest, teachers across the country submit a video explaining why they should be chosen to go to space and what experiment they would like to try to help inspire the next generation.
Christine Sawyer is a second-grade teacher at Bradley Creek Elementary who entered the contest. She’s doing a bubble experiment in which she will make an unpoppable bubble and add corn syrup or sugars to it to see its effects on Earth and in space.
If she’s chosen, Sawyer says it will show her students there are endless opportunities and encourage them to try new things.
“Whatever job they’re going to have down the road, the skills they learn in STEM are going to be valuable for them. Those critical thinking and problem-solving skills you need in any job. No matter what it is. I want the students that I have in my classroom and in New Hanover County to see that anything is possible. I want them to see themselves in the careers that are available to them,” Sawyer said.
