Accused scammer arrested at car dealership
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man allegedly known for conning people was arrested this morning at a car dealership in Wilmington.
James Gifford Cambow, 50, is accused of scamming multiple people in North Carolina and outside the state.
Wilmington Police arrested Cambow this morning at Neuwirth Motors of Wilmington for obtaining property by false pretense of more than $100,000 and possession of a firearm.
Cambow is accused of writing a check to Neuwirth for three vehicles last week, but at the time, he only took two of the vehicles with him. Sources say the checks bounced, so the dealership emailed Cambow and told him they had to refund him for the third vehicle because he had yet to pick it up.
Cambow, who is from Tennessee, drove back to Wilmington to pick up the refund.
When he arrived at the dealership, employees called police.
We’re told Neuwirth got both of the vehicles back. He drove one back to pick up the check and police in Kinsport, TN picked up the other one.
One of his alleged victims says it was only a matter of time before Cambow got caught.
“The only thing I was surprised about was he’s in Wilmington. I knew it was a matter of time that he’s going to get arrested. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you’re not going to fool all the people all the time,” Bill Davis said.
Cambow is in jail under a $210,000 bond. His first appearance in court is set for tomorrow.
