All girl charter school to open in Wilmington
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — An all girl charter school is set to open soon in New Hanover County.
The League of Women Voters met with the Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington Principal Laura Hunter Monday about the new school. Hunter said the school will open to 100 girls next August and it will offer grades 6 through 12.
Hunter said she has been an advocate for education for years and she wants to make sure these girls get the best opportunity to succeed.
“Nothing breaks my heart more than when young women who have incredible possibility and potential, don’t graduate at the end of their high school career,” Hunter said. “This is an opportunity to build a school from the ground up. A 6-12 continuous experience that really challenges girls.”
Hunter said they still have still have the challenge of finding a location for the school. She hopes it will be near UNCW. Enrollment begins in January.
