Amuzu Theatre brings holiday magic back to Southport with annual Christmas show

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Holiday cheer is returning to Southport as the Amuzu Theatre prepares for its annual Christmas show, opening the first two weekends of December.

Performances are scheduled for December 5th, 6th, and 7th, followed by December 12th, 13th, and 14th. Tickets are available at Ricky Evans Gallery in downtown Southport and Crossroads in Oak Island.

“We are getting ready for the holidays,” said organizer Sue Crippen. “Tickets are already on sale for the Amuzu Christmas show.”

Crippen said this year’s show carries a special message for the community.

“It’s been a little bit of a challenge of a year, especially with the tragedy that happened in Southport,” she said. “The cast and the crew and the owners, Bill and Kathy Furpless, really want to share the beauty of the season. It’s truly our gift of love and peace to Southport and the surrounding areas.”

Audiences can expect a mix of classic Christmas carols and a few new songs.

“It’s going to be a fun show,” Crippen said. “A little bit of everything, a lot of traditional Christmas carols and some things that might be new to some people.”

The historic Amuzu Theatre, which dates back more than a century, continues to undergo renovations. A new building is being added to the back of the existing structure and will feature a new stage, dressing rooms, and restrooms for the cast.

“The new building has been completed in terms of the outer structure,” Crippen said. “Inside is where the new stage will be. It’s going to be so great because right now the cast changes clothes in the balcony and has to go outside to enter the stage.”

She said the project represents an investment not only in the theatre but in Southport’s cultural future.

“Eventually, we hope to begin showing movies there again, which is how the theatre started,” Crippen said.

The new addition is expected to be finished by spring.
