Ashley flag football team wins state championship

Screaming Eagles went undefeated Saturday and secured a comeback in the championship

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Even though it’s not a sanctioned sport by the NCHSAA, this is the first state title in Ashley High School history.

The Screaming Eagles defeated both Apex 13-7 and Wakefield 41-7 in the inaugural final four state championship format that took place in Durham.

In the championship game, they trailed 7-0 with 5:20 left in the first half, but were able to put 6 points up before the break. MVP Sawyer Rigdon scored the game winning touchdown. Mia Agrillo was named the Defensive Most Outstanding Player. Both players spoke this week about what a championship would mean to them.

The NCHSAA Board of Directors proposed sanctioning the sport this past week, but did not vote on it.
