‘At least she’s in a better place and safe.’ Community pays respects to Mariah Woods
JACKSONVILLE, NC (WWAY) – The Onslow County Sheriff has confirmed the body recovered in a Pender County creek over the weekend was that of Mariah Woods. Tonight her family held a visitation for the public to come to pay respects.
The news from the Sheriff came as the visitation services began at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
“I sat there and cried for a good hour by myself,” said Margaret James who came to the visitation from Duplin County. “I mean I just couldn’t believe it. I was praying for a better outcome And just to have her gone is not real.”
Media was not allowed to come in and film the services. So we heard from those who went in on how the family and friends were handling the news.
“There was a lot of crying a lot of tears and everyone was very supportive to Heather and Alex,” said Sherri Nevarez.
Many of those who came feel connected to the story mostly because they gave their time either to help in the search for Mariah or felt the pain of losing her after the news that her body was found.
“That’s why I came out to show my love and support,” said Debbie Hopkins who was a part of a K9 team who searched for Mariah.
Mariah’s mother Kristy Woods’ live in boyfriend Earl Kimrey now sits behinds bars facing several charges. Many say they are showing support for her biological father Alex and his fiance Heather.
“When we walked in, Alex he was crying and so was Heather, but I can honestly say by us getting up to them their hugs were very warm and they seemed very sincere and very grateful,” said Nevarez.
No funeral dates or times have been made public yet. Kimrey has been charged in concealing of death and obstruction of justice. He is due back in court on the 18th.
