RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is warning people to watch out for immigration scams.

The AG’s office has received reports of scammers posing as immigration attorneys or government officials who offer help in exchange for a large upfront payment.

“When families look for immigration help, they deserve real answers from real professionals,” said Attorney General Jeff Jackson. “These scams do the opposite. They mislead people and take their money. Our office is working to stop this fraud and make sure people know where to find legitimate legal support.”

Scammers may use AI to impersonate reputable lawyers, advertise their services on social media, and create fake documents.

The scammers may also ask for personal information like copies of your birth certificate, social security number, or other sensitive documents.

Jackson’s office also reminds individuals that a notary public is not an attorney and cannot give legal advice about your immigration case and always get a written agreement that explains the services before making any payments.
