RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The Better Business Bureau, Eastern Carolinas (BBB) is warning people of scams ahead of Valentine’s Day.

They urge people to beware of fraudsters trying to romance you into giving up money or personal information.

BBB says that as of their latest scam tracker risk report, romance/friendship scams proved to be the third most risky scams of the year resulting in the highest median dollar loss.

Scammers often offer to help increase your finances, seem too hot to be true, are in a hurry to get off the dating site, try moving fast, talk about trust, don’t want to meet, use suspicious language, and share hard luck stories.

Here are some tips to protect yourself:

  • Never share money or personal information
  • Ask specific questions about details given in a profile
  • Do your research
  • Verify investment opportunities
