BCSO holds dog walking training for shelter volunteers

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The staff at Brunswick County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services held a training class Wednesday to aid shelter volunteers in walking dogs awaiting adoption.
Each day APS volunteers come out and assist with the many tasks enabling the shelter to run smoothly, and most importantly, to help the animals get ready to be adopted. Part of that is basic obedience skills for dogs.
During the class, held at the shelter in Supply, volunteers were taught best practices for controlling dogs while walking them on a leash. Each of the volunteers got to practice on dogs currently awaiting adoption.
By the end of the three hour class, each of the dogs were walking easily on their leash and were focused on their handler – all of which was done through leash training techniques with no verbal commands or treats.
These basic obedience skills will help these dogs be more adoptable and ready to go home to their fur-ever families.
