Beach homeowners boarding up, preparing for hurricane

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Many folks at the beach are not taking any chances with Hurricane Matthew.

There are several houses boarded up with shutters closed.

Sarah Webb said she has lived in Wrightsville Beach for seven years, but she has never seen a hurricane this strong. Webb said she has already boarded up her top windows, bought sand bags and sand. She took out cash and has a plan.

“This is the first time where it’s hurricane with a capital H and you just feel like I need to be doing what I need to be doing and you know they’re now saying that it could be veering away and I feel it’s because of me,” Webb said.

Webb said even if Hurricane Matthew does not hit the area directly or leave damage, she is glad she is prepared.

“I don’t need to be trying to get the last bottle of water, trying to get the last piece of plywood,” Webb said. “I need to go in there when the plywood is high up here and when the water is there and I’m really glad now cause I feel like I’m ready and if it doesn’t come, well, the money goes back in the bank, these go back on the shelf and I’m ready again.”

Webb said if they say go, she will leave. She said she has spent about $250 dollars to do all of this which was well worth it.
