Bicyclist killed after being struck by vehicle in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle in Wilmington Friday afternoon.

The crash occurred in the 6900 block of Market Street near Gordon Road shortly before 4:30 p.m.

According to a Wilmington Police Department sergeant at the scene, a red Toyota Tundra was heading east on Market Street. The bicyclist was riding on the sidewalk next to the road near the Waffle House. Police say the bicyclist, described as an adult male, then got onto Market Street and was struck by the truck.

When officers arrived, police say a nearby witness immediately began lifesaving measures but the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
