Bike ride to honor cyclist killed by impaired driver

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A 17 year old cyclist who was killed after being hit by an impaired driver in Brunswick County this past July was remembered this weekend with a ride in his honor.

One of Daniel Fetner’s favorite places to ride was Carolina Beach State Park, so members of the community gathered there for a casual ride on Saturday afternoon.

Daniel was a passionate cyclist and a bright young man who had planned to become a meteorologist before his life was tragically cut short.

It meant a lot to Daniel’s family that the community has rallied around them.

“Unfortunately, he was hit by an impaired driver. Of course, obviously, to me and my wife and our friends, neighbors, and church family, very devastating. But we’re staying strong in our faith,” said Chip Fetner, Daniel’s father.

Daniel’s Ride was sponsored by Cape Fear Cyclists and the Terry Benjey Bicycling Foundation. Attendees could also donated to Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Bike Walk NC.
