Bill allowing farmers to receive $40M in state aid advances

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) — Legislation providing farmers $40 million in state aid to help them hang on after last fall’s flooding is advancing in the Senate, though not without concerns.

The Senate Finance Committee approved legislation by 14-3 on Tuesday that allows farmers to apply for grants of up to $100,000 each.

Agriculture officials say farmers’ direct losses total $375 million.

The grants are meant to provide a revenue bridge so farmers can plant and aren’t forced to literally sell the farm.

Senators had problems with creating a board to develop and oversee the application process. The committee amended the bill to put Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers in charge and ensure no money goes to administration.

Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler says he still has questions that must be addressed before a floor vote.
