Bladen County clears up rumors over dam failure, offers damage survey

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Bladen County Emergency Services and the US Army Corp of Engineers are both addressing rumors that Lock and Dam 1 on the Cape Fear River has failed.

“It has not failed. It is overtopped by flood waters as it was during Hurricane Matthew in 2016,” said Lisa Parker, the US Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District Public Affairs Officer.

Bladen County Emergency Services Director Bradley Kinlaw says the water is coming over the dike in Kelly, which is what led to the mandatory evacuation issued Thursday morning.

Kinlaw says they spent the day doing evacuations in the Kelly area. Buses were sent down there to take evacuees to a shelter.

Kinlaw says the Cape Fear River bridge in Elizabethtown is open.

Bladen County also wants residents to fill out a damage report to help determine how many homes have been damaged due to Hurricane Florence.

The county says filling out the damage report does not ensure financial assistance, you will still need to file with FEMA after individual assistance is declared for Bladen County.

Here’s a link to the survey.
