Bladen County sheriff warns of rise in scam calls, texts and emails

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an increase in scam calls, texts and emails reported over the past month.
Sheriff Jim McVicker is encouraging residents to stay alert and recognize common warning signs associated with scams.
According to the sheriff’s office, local law enforcement agencies and courts will not ask individuals to send money through wire transfers or digital currency to pay debts or fees. Officials also say legitimate government emails typically end in “.gov” or “.org,” and residents should be cautious of messages from accounts using common email services such as gmail, yahoo, or hotmail.
Authorities say scammers may claim money is needed to dismiss warrants or legal issues. Officials emphasize that payments are not made in that manner and legal processes such as bond hearings take place in person with a magistrate.
The sheriff’s office also warns that scammers often advise victims not to contact law enforcement or seek legal help. Residents are also urged to be cautious of notices involving fees from places they have never visited.
If contacted by someone requesting money, officials recommend asking detailed questions, including the caller’s name, agency, reason for the payment and a physical location to make a payment in person. Residents are encouraged to verify that information independently.
Authorities advise reporting suspected scams to law enforcement immediately and contacting the Bladen County Clerk of Court to confirm whether any legal matter is legitimate.
The sheriff’s office is also urging residents to talk with family and friends, especially older adults, who may be more vulnerable to scams.
