Boater safety tips for July 4th weekend in the Cape Fear

CAROLINA BEACH (WWAY) — Whether its by boat, jet ski, kayak or swimming; the waterways are expected to be busy this July 4th.

To help ensure the safety of yourself and others, Clayton Ludwick, along with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission are taking action.

“This weekend is On the Road, On the Water, Don’t drink and Drive Campaign. So, our goal is to reduce the amount of impaired boat operators that are on the water,” Ludwick said.

Last year in North Carolina, boating incidents resulted in 19 fatalities and 17 of those were not wearing a life jacket. According to North Carolina law, a life jacket for each person on board is required; along with a fire extinguisher and a boaters license if you were born after January 1st, 1988.

Despite those precautions, Ludwick said sometimes it can be those around you who could make a mistake.

“A lot of people don’t know how to drive a boat, but they’re still going to come down here and drive it. So, just because you know how to drive a boat, doesn’t mean everybody around you necessarily does.”

Ludwick also said it’s important to remember these tips if you find yourself on a busy waterway.

“Take your time, increase your following distance is an important factor. Be aware of all the boats around you and behind you.”
