Brunswick County Commissioners approve aerial mosquito spraying
BRUNCWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County commissioners are looking to combat mosquito populations in the county.
At Monday’s board meeting, commissioners voted to approve aerial mosquito control for heavily populated areas of the county, with a maximum cost of $120,000.
After Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 brought heavy rain to the county last month, mosquito populations skyrocketed. All those mosquitoes can be a big pest to residents, but they can also spread disease.
Commissioner Pat Sykes noted the spraying will be done after sunset and before sunrise.
“It goes on during the night because we don’t want to hurt our bees and our other natural resources because of the spraying,” Sykes explained.
This is not the first time the county has used arial spraying to combat mosquito populations. Sykes said in the past the method has been effective, and that the public will be notified before the spraying starts.
The pesticides used do not pose a danger to people or pets.
