Brunswick County law enforcement agencies host free “Chop with a Cop” contest

Event meant to build trust between teens and officers

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WWAY) – The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with Police from Oak Island, Southport and Boiling Spring Lakes to put on a free event Tuesday.

You’ve heard of “Coffee with a Cop” or “Shop with a Cop… But how about axe throwing?!

The second-annual “Chop with a Cop” saw dozens of teens and pre-teens learning the art of axe throwing and participating in a competition at Throw Baxe.

“We all want them to see that even though we have a badge and gun, we are the same as you,” says Matthew Tweety with the Oak Island Police Department. “People make mistakes all day every day but we are here to show that we can help them, guide them, and maybe show them one day they can be a cop.”

First place was earned by retired Major Tommy Tolly from BCSO and Maddox Cagle.
