Brunswick County Schools selects two schools for phone-free pilot program
BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Schools is moving forward with its Phone-Free Schools pilot program.
On Tuesday, June 25, Superintendent Dale Cole informed the Brunswick County Board of Education that he had selected Cedar Grove Middle School and Town Creek Middle School for the pilot program.
The two middle schools were selected due to similar enrollment numbers, similar student demographics, and representation from various areas of Brunswick County. Data from student discipline referrals pertaining to cell phones was also a factor in the selection of the two middle schools.
“We believe that this pilot program will aid us in minimizing distractions, promoting social interaction, and encouraging responsible device use,” Superintendent Cole stated. “We will provide clear guidelines for students on how to store their phones securely, and our teachers and staff will be available to address any questions you or your child may have.”
The program will use Yondr phone pouches, which magnetically seals shut once the phone is placed inside. The pouches can only be unlocked by special devices placed in different areas of the school.
The pilot program will begin during the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year. If successful, additional schools may be added during the second semester.
