Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office warns of Chromebook scam

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is bringing the attention of a recent scam to residents.
The scam allegedly targets Chromebook laptop users and appears as pop-up that interrupts what you are doing and instructs you to call a phone number to “fix” a virus.
Those who see this pop-up are told not to call the number as scammers will attempt to trick you into providing your password or IP address. If the scammer gets ahold of this information, they will have immediate access to your device and personal accounts.
According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, someone recently fell victim to this scam.
As a reminder, never give out your passwords, never share your IP address, and know that legitimate companies will not ask for this information.
