BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community about a scam targeting families of recently arrested individuals.

Scammers are calling people posing as bail bondsmen or law enforcement and claiming an immediate bond payment for their family member to be released.

The calls are often coming from a legitimate number, the scammers are sometimes using real local names, and happening before the first court appearance.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office reminds people that they do not handle bond payments, they’ll never request payment over the phone or by apps, and they’ll never ask for personal or financial information.

If you receive this call, hang up right away, to verify or report a scam call 910-253-2777, and always look up and all a bail bondsman’s official number.
