Brunswick H2GO explains irrigation ban and plans moving forward

BRUNSWICK COUNTY (WWAY) — After irrigation restrictions were put in place last week by Brunswick H2GO, several residents got the chance to voice their concerns at a meeting Wednesday night.
Currently, H2G0 customers are in Stage Four Shortage Alert, prohibiting all irrigation. H2GO commissioner Steve Hosmer said there were a few things that caused the ban.
“We’re a fairly new organization, as far as working with water from the aquifers and we’re still building our system. This drought was so extreme, that it just went beyond our capacity as people continued to water, and water more, and water more. As a result, we ended up over driving the system and we needed to cut back to preserve the aquifers and to preserve our equipment.”
The board of commissioners did take action however. One of those being a rate increase, where if more water is used, customers rates would go up for every thousand gallons. Customers will be notified of that on July 1st and it will go into affect on August 1st.
Another change will also go into affect on July 1st.
“We’re going to go to a stage two, which means you can irrigate twice a week. The dates, and times, and hours, and all that information will be passed onto our customers,” Hosmer said.
The board also announced that irrigation customers would be receiving a 50% discount on their base rate in the future due to the current restrictions.
