Brunswick Town Historic Site commemorates 1748 Spanish attack with historic tours

WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site (BTFA) honored the 277th anniversary of the Spanish attack on Brunswick.

Saturday marked the anniversary of the blowing up of the Spanish privateer La Fortuna which was believed to be discovered recently.

Walking tours were given in the afternoon to discover little-known facts about the attack and give people the chance to ask questions.

Site manager for BTFA, Jim McKee says the tours help keep history alive.

“It’s basically a deep dive into what life was like in a week of turmoil in 1748. I try to give what it was like from both sides. Unfortunately, we don’t have too many opinions or accounts from the Spanish side,” McKee said.

Mckee went on to say they do have firsthand accounts from the militia and a ship captain that had been captured and escaped.

They plan to have more tours throughout the year.
