Bulldogs looking to set standard no one else can outdo
DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — For the fourth year in a row, the Wallace-Rose Hill Bulldogs are in the state championship game. It’s an incredible feat, but it’s a position first year Bulldog coach Kevin Motsinger said he knew his team would be in.
“I told my wife when we got the job and I got to meet the kids when we started working out, we generally take a vacation near Christmas, and I said we better plan that after the state championship game.” Coach Motsinger said.
From that day on, Coach Motsinger put his mindset into motion and helped lead his incredibly talented team to a fourth straight title game.
Call it a self fulfilling prophecy or call it faith. but just like him taking over this job, he says everything happens for a reason.
“I think a lot of folks thought I was nuts,” Coach Motsinger said. “You never follow the guy, Coach Price, that’s won 5 state championships in 8 years. But for some reason God wanted me there.”
One could say it was devine intervention that got the bulldogs to this point, that may be true. But this team is also built with skill from top to bottom.
Wallace has bullied their way through the playoffs at home and on the road, catching the attention of the Reidsville Rams.
“Well they’ve got a good group of skill guys,” Reidsville Head Coach Jimmy Teague said. “When you look at a team, you think there’s one or two guys, but they’ve got three or four. That’s the thing that makes it tough for them. On top of that, they’ve got a really good offensive line and a lot of speed on defense that will be a big challenge for us.”
This weekend in Chapel Hill, Coach Mots has the chance to add his name to the Bulldog lore and his team has the chance to do something historic that no other school will be able to outdo.
“The chance to win four in a row, something that will never be beaten, it could be tied but it will never be beaten,” Coach Motsinger said. There’s not many things in life that you know can’t be beaten. That’s my goal as a head coach to try and find a way for them to accomplish that dream. On a personal note, you want to be on the top. If you’re a competitor, you want to win. But it’s more about the kids. I want them to have that opportunity and here we are. It’s up to us and we have to find a way to get it done.”
