Burgaw residents raise concerns over proposed rezoning that could lead to more than 500 homes being built

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — A proposed housing development in the Town of Burgaw has some residents questioning if it would be a good fit in the area.

On Thursday, dozens of residents from Burgaw and Pender County gathered in Hankins Park to discuss the potential rezoning of land that would create more 500 homes in Burgaw. The developer would be DR Horton and would be located at 2630 NC HWY 53 W.

Many residents at the meeting expressed concerns over flooding, drainage and traffic if the development was to be rezoned. Some residents also claimed the developer had a bad reputation and had poor online reviews.

“They’ve got some serious reputation issues with this builder. If the builder could really get in and do some quality control with their subcontractors,” said Burgaw resident Sandra Bullard. “The neighborhood, the density is extreme. It’s a 285 acre track and you’re going to come in and put 531 single family homes in a really small, historic community.”

It’s also something Pender County resident Patricia Koluch thinks could cause many issues.

“It seems quite excessive on wetlands and agricultural land. It think it’s unnecessary to build something of that magnitude on wetlands. There’s sewer and water concerns, flooding concerns.”

The Burgaw Planning Board will discuss the matter at their next meeting on Thursday, April 18 at 5:30PM at the Burgaw Town Center at 108 E Wilmington St, Burgaw.
