C.B. McGrath speaks at Power Breakfast Series

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This morning new UNCW men’s basketball coach C.B. McGrath took a break from coaching to speak to crowds at the Power Breakfast Series.

He has learned a lot during his time in basketball and today he brought a unique perspective on how people can be successful in life using those lessons.

“There’s no one way to go about doing things, you’ve got to stick to yourself and do what you know how to do and do what you do best,” McGrath said. “Not worry about what other people are doing, worry about how you’re doing and how your company is doing.”

Coach McGrath shared his experiences to a packed room in hopes they can find success in the business world like he has had in the sports world. Coming off of his third national championship season, McGrath says the relationship between basketball and business is not too different.

“A business would have to get everybody to buy all in to what they’re trying to do and on the basketball floor with the basketball team you’ve got 10 or 12 guys that have to be all in working towards one common goal to be successful.” McGrath said.

On that note, that’s exactly the stage coach McGrath is currently in at his new job with the Seahawks. At the breakfast, McGrath spoke on the importance of recruiting. He himself is a successful recruiter and he continued to show it this year bringing in a class under a shortened schedule for his staff and after losing CJ Bryce.

“We needed to get some guys who can make some open shots. Making shots is easier said than done,” McGrath said. “You’ve got to see the ball go through the baskets in the games but we hope that happens.”

The season is still several months away and McGrath wants his team to heed the lesson he gave to the crowds today.

“Right now I’m just trying to get these guys to understand how we want to play and what we want to do,” McGrath said. “I’m not worried about who we’re playing, I’m worried about what we’re doing.”
