Candidates finish filing for 2018 election

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The filing period for the 2018 election is over and there is a clear picture of the races now.

Many seats are up for grabs at the county and state level. One of the most packed elections this year is for Pender County Sheriff. Current Sheriff, Carson Smith, is leaving his seat to run for the State House of Representatives. Now eight candidates, six republicans and two democrats, want his job.

Pender County is not the only area with a crowded race for Sheriff. In Columbus and Bladen Counties, three people are challenging the incumbent sheriffs. Also in Bladen County, Robert Pittenger will vie for his spot against five challengers.

In New Hanover County, Representative Ted Davis faces a Republican primary challenger for his seat while three democrats are challenging Republican representative Holly Grange for her seat. Commissioners Skip Watkins and Rob Zapple will both fight for their seats in the primary. Zapple will face two other democrats while Watkins has one republican opponent.

In Brunswick County, Commissioner Pat Sykes will challenge representative Frank Iler in a GOP primary. Republican Senators Bill Rabon and Michael Lee will each face democrat and libertarian challengers in November.
