Cape Fear braces for heavy rain as Debby slowly approaches

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s going to be a very soggy week across the Cape Fear. Scattered rain chances are possible this afternoon before more widespread moderate-to-heavy rain arrives on Tuesday. The rain will continue on and off through the end of the week, with significant totals possible.

Expect upwards of 10″-12″+ across the area with an increasing risk of flash flooding towards Wednesday. Because of the clouds and rain chances, highs all week long will be lower than average in the lower to middle 80s. As Debby slowly pulls away late on Friday, improving conditions are in store for the weekend with warmer weather and just scattered rain odds.

Hurricane Debby made landfall this morning in the big bend area of Florida as a category 1 storm. As it pushes inland, weakening is expected before Debby moves offshore again off the Georgia/South Carolina coasts. As Debby slowly moves north, as much as 20″-25″+ is possible across southern South Carolina and southeast Georgia.

Heavy rain will be our biggest local impact, with a moderate impact from gusty winds (30-40+ mph) and a few isolated tornadoes as the eastern bands rotate in later this week. Stay with WWAY for the very latest.
