Carolina Beach could see a 9% property tax increase as 2024-2025 budget is in development
CAROLINA BEACH (WWAY) — The Town of Carolina Beach recently released its latest draft of the 2024-2025 budget, which includes requests from various departments. It also includes a proposed 9% property tax increase for Carolina Beach residents.
Carolina Beach Mayor Lynn barbee said inflation is having an impact this year.
“The primary reason is quite honestly inflation of everything, then a big part of it too is inflation of wages. We’re having to pay more for firefighters and police officers and maintenance workers just like everyone else so,” Barbee said.
By state law – the town has to have the budget in by late June. The town held an open house this week, with another public hearing planned for next Tuesday.
Some of the bigger increases come from the police and fire departments, with each requesting around a $400,000 increase.
Barbee said while he does expect some push back from residents, he understands why.
“I think most people understand because they also feel the effects of inflation. But let’s be honest, nobody, including elected officials, like to increase taxes. I’m sure there will be some push back from the residents and I think that’s good and healthy. It’s their job to hold us accountable,” said Barbee.
