CFCC making history by heading to NJCAA Tournament

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It is a historic year for the Cape Fear Community College athletics program as both the men’s and women’s basketball teams are heading to the national tournament.

This is the first time in school history that both the men and women have advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Championship Tournament in the same year.

Today the send off celebration was on as Sea Devils fans came to see the two teams leave for their games.

The men struggled midway through the year, but finished strong down the stretch. While the women are on an 18-game win streak.

The seasons may have taken different paths for the two teams but their goal is the same; win.

“We talked about it since day one, this is where we wanted to be,” CFCC Women’s Basketball Head Coach Lori Drake said. “We weren’t chasing rankings, we were chasing rings. This is exactly where we wanted to be.”

“I think we play a different style of play that most people don’t prepare for and we certainly don’t lack the confidence,” CFCC Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ryan Mantlo said. “We’re going there extremely excited and expecting to win.”

Both tournaments begin on March 20. The men take on Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. The women will play Kankakee Community College in Arkansas.

Best of luck and bring it home!
