WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As demand for nurses continues to grow across the country and in the Cape Fear region, Cape Fear Community College is working to fill several open positions within its nursing and health sciences programs.

The CFCC nursing program prepares students to become registered nurses through classroom instruction, simulation labs and clinical training.

Questions about staffing surfaced after a man identified only as “Larry,” whose wife is a faculty member in the program, alleged the college has continued admitting and retaining its current number of nursing students despite multiple vacant faculty and administrative positions.

Larry also claimed the staffing shortages contributed to the early retirement of the program’s director, Brenda Holland, and other faculty departures.

“There is a lot of politics going on at CFCC, which has forced the director of nursing in Health and Human Services, Brenda Holland, who had been with CFCC for 28 years, to retire. She was beloved by both her peers and within the nursing community. Because of the forced retirement, a lot of her staff have decided to resign,” he said.

In a statement to WWAY, Cape Fear Community College disputed those claims, saying no personnel in the nursing program have been forced to retire. The college said personnel matters are confidential.

CFCC also said it is actively recruiting for nine positions within its Health Sciences division and has identified strong candidates for each opening.
