Chatham County deputy helps rescue swimmers at Ocean Isle Beach

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — An off-duty deputy helped rescue two swimmers in distress during a beach outing over Easter weekend at Ocean Isle Beach.
According to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Herbie Stubbs was at the beach with his family when he spotted two young swimmers struggling near a pier.
Officials said the swimmers were caught in strong currents and clinging to pilings when Stubbs, his son Chandler and a family friend entered the water to help.
They joined others to form a human chain, working together to safely bring the swimmers back to shore. Stubbs’ wife called 911 as the rescue unfolded.
Authorities said everyone involved made it out safely, with only minor injuries reported.
“In these situations, you can’t get worked up,” Stubbs said. “That’s what gets you in trouble.”
The sheriff’s office praised Stubbs for stepping in to help, noting his actions reflect a commitment to service both on and off duty.
