Clarkton man wins $100,000 Powerball prize

CLARKTON, NC (WWAY) — A Clarkton man is celebrating a six-figure windfall after a $3 Powerball ticket turned into a $100,000 prize.
Terry Freeman of Clarkton purchased the lucky Quick Pick ticket at Sam’s Pit Stop on Jefferson Street in Whiteville, according to a news release from the North Carolina Education Lottery. Freeman matched the numbers on four white balls and the red Powerball in Saturday’s drawing, winning an initial $50,000. His prize doubled to $100,000 because he opted for the Power Play feature, which doubled his winnings when the 2X multiplier was drawn.
Freeman claimed his prize at lottery headquarters on Tuesday. After required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $71,751.
The next Powerball drawing, scheduled for Wednesday, offers a jackpot of $65 million as an annuity or $29.9 million in cash. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are approximately 1 in 292 million..
The North Carolina Education Lottery reports that Bladen County has received over $38 million in state grants, funded by lottery proceeds, to help build a new school.
