Coastal Carolina edges Seahawks Softball, 2-1
WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – Freshman Stavi Augur registered two hits and scored a run as Coastal Carolina edged UNCW, 2-1, in non-conference softball action at Boseman Field on Tuesday evening.
The Chanticleers, playing just their 14th game outside of Conway this season, upped their record to 22-20 with their fifth consecutive victory. UNCW, meanwhile, falls to 12-22 after closing out an eight-game homestand.
Augur hit a double down the left field line in the second inning before adding a single in the fifth inning. She also reached base on an error in the third inning.
Junior Ashley Guillette earned the win in the circle for Coastal Carolina. She stands at 11-9 after scattering one unearned run on three hits over 5.0 innings with four strikeouts. Freshman Kaitlin Beasley-Polko gave up one hit over the final two frames to nail down her third save of the year.
Four different players had a hit for the Seahawks in the loss while junior Kali Jones recorded three walks.
Freshman Emily Langkamp took the loss after allowing one run on three hits over 3.0 innings. Junior Haley Lendermanallowed an unearned run on two hits in the final 4.0 innings.
How It Happened: Coastal Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single by freshman Taylor Sweigart before a double down the right field line by sophomore Kassidy Smith upped the margin to 2-0 in the fourth. UNCW narrowed the gap to 2-1 in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Dominique Travers, but the Seahawks were unable to get any closer.
Notes: Coastal Carolina left a season-high 13 runners on base … Freshman Anna Knox has reached base safely in seven straight games after being hit by a pitch in the seventh inning … Junior Lacey Fox reached base three times, extending her streak of reaching safely to six games in a row … The Seahawks allowed a season-high eight walks.
Up Next: UNCW embarks on a seven-game road swing this weekend with a three-game series at Drexel. The Seahawks and the Dragons will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 14, before closing out the series with a single game on Sunday, Apr. 15.
