SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — A new colonial-themed dinner event is being added to this year’s N.C. 4th of July Festival in Southport as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.

Festival organizers said the Colonial Dinner will be held Wednesday, July 1, at 5:30 p.m. at the city’s Community Building on Bay Street along the downtown Southport waterfront.

The event will focus on food and music from colonial times. Guests will hear from historian Desiree Bridge, who designed the menu and will discuss the flavors, traditions and favorite foods of Colonial America.

Historian Jim McKee is also scheduled to speak about daily life during the colonial period. John Bennett will highlight music enjoyed by colonial settlers.

“We wanted to introduce an event that would create a fun, interesting environment for guest to learn about this important time in our Country’s history,” Fosbury said in a news release. “We’ll also hear about some of the challenges of sourcing the foods, as well as how they played a part in the colonists’ fight for independence.”

Tickets are $35 per person and attendance is limited. Organizers said anyone interested in attending can visit the festival website for more information.

Fosbury said the event is designed for people who enjoy history, food and the chance to experience the colonial period while marking the country’s 250th anniversary.

This year’s N.C. 4th of July Festival in Southport is scheduled to begin Friday, June 26, and continue through Saturday, July 4, with events planned in both Southport and Oak Island.
