Concerns aired about possible New River fishing restrictions

SNEADS FERRY, N.C. (AP) – Commercial fishermen are concerned the military may restrict fishing along sections of the New River because of unexploded shells in the area.

WITN-TV reports that dozens of people turned out for a meeting at a Sneads Ferry restaurant Monday to discuss the situation.

Camp Lejeune officials say 7,000 items have been found in the area including ammunition, propellers and other debris. The military is studying the environmental impact.

Some of those attending the meeting Monday said they have fished and dug clams in the area for years with no problems. County officials say they will relay their concerns to military and state officials so fishermen can still use the area.

Camp Lejeune has an open house next week to answer questions about possible fishing restrictions.
