WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An investigation is underway after three empty railcars derailed late Friday night at the Front Street crossing in Wilmington.

According to a statement from Wilmington Terminal Railroad, a CSX train carrying 17 intermodal cars and 47 freight cars derailed three empty railcars around 11 p.m. on Friday as it moved onto Wilmington Terminal Railroad’s right-of-way.

Officials said there were no injuries and no commodity loss or spills associated with the incident.

CSX sent a locomotive to pull the non-derailed cars and clear blocked crossings by about 1:30 a.m., the statement said.

Wilmington Terminal Railroad said its team worked with the Wilmington Police Department to reroute traffic during the response.

The railroads are now investigating what caused the derailment.
