Downtown Wilmington sees snow

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington woke up to a winter wonderland on Wednesday morning. After several inches of snow accumulated overnight, the city was blanketed in a soft layer that transformed the streets.

“Happy snow day!” a passerby exclaimed.

For some, the snow was a rare treat. One resident, bundled in nearly every item of clothing they owned, marveled at the beauty of the scene. “Once in a lifetime. Awesome. Don’t you like it?” they said, a smile in their voice. “Got everything I own in my closet on.”

The snowstorm had begun late the night before, coating the streets in a layer of icy flakes that created some challenging conditions on the roads. However, for many, the crunchy snow underfoot added to the charm, making everything feel a little quieter.

“It’s quiet… Kind of peaceful out here,” one local commented, taking in the stillness of the morning.

As the day progressed, a few brave souls ventured out early, eager to enjoy the quiet before the world fully woke up. “I work remote, so I have to work… I’m going to read on the couch and beg my dog to come outside and play. I won’t work that hard today,” one local laughed. “It’s really cool seeing everything shut down. It’s a little weird, not normal, but it’s nice. If this happened in Boston, I’d probably have school today!”

For others, the snow day meant taking a break from the regular grind. People bundled up in scarves and mittens, enjoying the slower pace of the day. “I want to build a snowman… They’ve got one up at the Irish Pub,” one person said.

And animals embracing some firsts. “This is her first time in the snow!” her owner beamed. “We think she’s a rescue, but she’s loving it.”

As we walked further through downtown, we met more people and pets who were equally excited to be out in the snow. Some were on foot, others were sliding down the icy streets on makeshift sleds—surfboards, garbage cans, and anything else they could find to make the most of the day. Near Chandler’s Wharf, a group of friends was happily sledding, laughing all the way down the street.

“I haven’t gotten a chance to go for real yet this year, so I was itching for it,” one sledder admitted, grinning from ear to ear. “This is really cool. We’ll see how long it lasts, but I might try again if it sticks around. It’s not much, but it’s something… Something is better than nothing.”
