Suspect arrested in death of Edgecombe County mayor, wife

LEGGETT, NC (AP/WNCN) — The mayor of a North Carolina town and his wife have been found dead at their home and one man is now charged with murder.
News outlets report the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office at first withheld the identities of the victims found Thursday, but Leggett Town Commissioner Teresa Summerlin identified them as Mayor Gary Skelton and Jackie Dawn Skelton.
The Skelton’s were found dead on their property in Leggett after deputies responded to a welfare check at that address.

The Skeltons had been shot to death, Sheriff Clee Atkinson said.

“We were able to solve this double homicide in less than eight hours,” Atkinson said.

Two suspects were taken into custody following the discovery of  the Skelton’s bodies.

Keith Earl Williams, 25, of Tarboro was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

He’s being held at the Edgecombe County Detention Center. A second person is being held on unrelated charges, Atkinson said.

Summerlin says Jackie Skelton was an oncology nurse at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital, and didn’t show up to work Thursday. Her coworkers requested a welfare check, which led to the discovery of the bodies.

Gary Skelton was a banker at BB&T in Rocky Mount until retirement. He was in his second term as mayor of the eastern North Carolina town with a population of around five dozen.
