Emerald Isle bans shark chumming during daytime for summer

EMERALD ISLE, NC (AP) — Reacting to recent shark bites along the coast, Emerald Isle has banned shark chumming during daytime hours for the rest of the summer season.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reports (http://bit.ly/29X5NoO) the restriction on shark chumming remains in effect until Sept. 15. It applies to the beach and nearshore area along the town’s beach strand along the ocean and Bogue Sound.

Chumming will be allowed from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Town Manager Frank Rush said the Board of Commissioners decided to restrict chumming at its meeting earlier this week.

Two people were bitten in June near Atlantic Beach and Fort Macon in Carteret County.
