Employees of House of Raeford continuing to be paid

TEACHEY, NC (WWAY) – Saturday night the House of Raeford poultry plant caught on fire, destroying the building.

At a news conference today a spokesman from The House of Raeford explained that they do intend to rebuild and even help their more than 300 employees during the repair process.

“Part of this is reassigning these employees to other locations,” Dave Witter, House of Raeford spokesman, said. “So until that is completed, we really won’t know for sure, but yes they’re going to be paid their normal wage, whatever they would make in a normal work week.”

Duplin county fire marshal Ricky Deavers says fire crews are continuing to look for hot spots.

They’ve been on hand since late Saturday night and plan to stay through the evening.

“It’s going to be an ongoing process,” Deavers said. “I’ve heard three or four hundred people are affected with jobs. The House of Raeford has reached out to them but it’s going to be awhile until they can get back and operate.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Three first responders got hurt but are expected to be ok.
