Experts warn of increased summer pests, offer safe repellent tips
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With the warmer months upon us more pests are out, especially different kinds of ants and mosquitoes.
To help keep the bugs out get rid of any standing water and don’t leave food out.
Before applying repellants and sprays, read the labels to ensure you apply them properly and avoid products with harmful pesticides.
Gabriella de Souza is a consumer horticulture agent with New Hanover County Cooperative Extension.
She says although mosquitoes can be annoying, they’re still important.
“Keep in mind that they’re important members of the ecosystem too so of them are actually pollinators as well. So, it’s just important to consider. But then again, it’s not super comfortable being bitten while you’re trying to have a cookout so just be mindful of sources of water,” de Souza said.
De Souza adds there are also mosquito repellant plants such as citronella or anything with lemon oils or eucalyptus oils that will help deter mosquitoes.
