Family of shooting victim seeks to help youth

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Nearly one year ago, 14 year old Aljhean Williams of Wilmington was the first murder victim of 2016.

Today, the community came together to commemorate Williams and promote alternatives to violence.

Following Williams’ death, his family and other community members created a non-profit organization to offer different paths in life other than violence.

They also want to promote the idea that anyone can be who they want to be.

Friends, family and others came to speak at an event in honor of Williams on Sunday to speak about violence among the youth in Wilmington and find some closure in knowing their organization can help others.

This was true for Aljhean Williams Teens Against Violence Inc. founder Lloyd James.

“Closure to me is to have something to go on with my nephew’s name on it,” James said. ” That means something. That means a change.”

James went on to add that he hopes the message of “lead one, teach one and unite the youth into a better tomorrow” can be that change.

If you would like to join the group, you can contact James at (910)352-5866 or Board of Director Brenda Galloway at (910)632-3219.
