FEMA launches website to help dispel rumors and misinformation

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — More than a week and a half after Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina and other areas of the Southeast, FEMA is trying to stop the spread of harmful misinformation.

To debunk the spread of false information, FEMA has launched a website that answers some of the more popular rumors that are going viral.

Some false information includes claims that FEMA is running out of money for hurricane relief and alleged airspace restrictions.

FEMA’s website also includes links to applying for loans and further assistance for survivors affected by Helene.

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said if this continues, it will impact people’s ability to trust the government to help them in times of crisis like this.

“This has to stop because if it continues, we will see more and more people not trusting their federal government to be able to give them what they need,” Criswell said. “And so I need people to register for assistance so I can get them the financial resources they need to support their recovery.”
