Female firefighters: Leland Fire has more than four times the national average

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Nationally, female firefighters represent 4 percent of professional firefighters. However, Leland Fire and Rescue is setting a standard for gender diversity, with women making up roughly 16 percent of their fire fighters.

Chief Chris Langlois said there’s a reason their station has roughly four times the national average. His secret? Langlois explained if you build it, they will come.

“We really believe that if we create a culture that reflects what we want to become, we will attract those types of people, regardless of what their diversity is. It allows us to get different ideas, new ideas that help us achieve success in where we want to go.”

This attracts men and women who truly want to make a difference. Gabrielle Cooksey, a fire fighter, said she’s worked harder than most to get to where she is today, but the job is worth it.

Fire Rescue Specialist Whitley Lovette and Firefighter Gavrielle Cooksey have worked hard to get to where they are today, but say the job is well worth it.

“I love just challenging myself,” said Cooksey, “and knowing that I can do something and that things are possible if you work for it.”

Fire specialist Whitney Lovette agreed. Lovette said women can bring a lot to the table, and at five feet tall, she can fit into confined spaces, is easily lifted by her male colleagues, and often takes on a comforting role that isn’t second nature to most.

“Seeing children, or elderly people you know, our nature is a mothering nature,” Whitley said. “We’re female. They don’t always think about that. And sometimes it puts more people at ease.”

According to Whitley, if you can work hard and stay strong, you can fight fires no matter your background, race, or gender.

Langlois says the Leland Fire Department is still accepting volunteer applications. If you’re interested in learning more or applying, visit here.
