The North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the pairings for the upcoming high school football playoffs on Saturday. First round action will begin on Friday, November 15th. Several schools from our region will host first round games. WWAY's 5th Quarter will be your one-stop shop throughout the playoffs.
The high school football regular season is complete. On Friday we had highlights on the 5th Quarter from Whiteville-South Columbus, East Bladen-West Bladen, East Columbus-West Columbus, New Hanover-Topsail, West Brunswick-Ashley, Hoggard-South Brunswick, North Brunswick-East Duplin and Trask-Pender. In fact we had postgame reaction from Trask's first victory of the season and postgame reaction from the South Columbus win over Whiteville.
Buzz Peterson's UNCW basketball squad opens the regular season this weekend with two games in Iowa. Cape Fear Community College will host the annual Cape Fear Classic this weekend in downtown Wilmington in men's college basketball action. Hoggard won on senior night in a rare Monday night high school football game for the Vikings. The UNCW women's basketball team dropped their exhibition contest on Monday night against UNC Pembroke. Plus more!
On Sunday UNCW continued its domination in exhibition games with its 26th consecutive preseason victory following an easy 92-51 decision over NCAA Division III Methodist Sunday at Trask Coliseum. The UNCW volleyball team also won. We had highlights from both of those games on WWAY. The Cape Fear Community College women's soccer team captured the Region X title on Sunday. Concerns about the threat of severe weather tonight has forced changes to tonight's high school football schedule. Several games have moved up kick-off from the originally scheduled 7:30 p.m. or even moved the game to another night.
Quate McKinzie has transferred from Pender High to Harrells Christian Academy. McKinzie is a sophomore who's already on the radar of several college coaches. Champions! Boston defeated St. Louis 6-1 on Wednesday night to win the World Series. It's the first fall classic title for Boston in their home ballpark in 95 years. Laney, Hoggard, Whiteville, South Brunswick and East Bladen won first round state playoff games in soccer on Wednesday. East Bladen is this week's football team of the week.
