Film screening held at Jengo’s Playhouse in Wilmington for ‘North Putnam’

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Friday night Jengo’s Playhouse in Wilmington hosted a screening for the observational documentary North Putnam.

It’s a film that captures a year in a life of a school system in North Putnam, Indiana.

The screening is part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers.

Prior to watching the film, people gathered for food and drinks.

After the film — a question-and-answer session was held with Joel Fendelman, the director of the film.

Fendelman and engagement and artist service coordinator with UNCW Office of the Arts, Alexis Dickerson say it’s important to bring the community together through film.

“Definitely guilty of this– staying home and watching movies on streamers. But there is something about coming out, with community, in the same room, and watching a film,” Fendelman said.

“But it’s also community leaders here having conversations about the themes of the film and how people interact with it and how the people relate to the films,” Dickerson shares.

Fendelman adds that having the audience respond to the film and being present for it is the completion of the artistic process.

The tour is locally sponsored by UNCW Office of Arts, the non-profit organization Working Films, WHQR Public Radio and Cucalorus Film Foundation.
