WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department released an updated regarding Friday’s Graystone Inn Fire.

The Fire Marshal’s Office says the fire was an accident and it originated in the basement due to construction work on the building.

No injuries were reported. The New Hanover County Building Inspector deemed the building condemned over the weekend.

On Friday, the Wilmington Fire Department responded to the fire on Third Street. Upon arrival, they saw smoke and flames.

Firefighters quickly begun their search and attempted to extinguish the fire, but they were unable to contain it due to the size of the fire and the void spaces created by the ongoing construction of the building which allowed the fire to travel from the basement floor to the roof.

After a few hours, the fire was called under control, but the department stayed on scene to put out hot spots for about 24 hours.
